We had a wonderful day fly fishing in May with Juanito. I am new to fly fishing and my boyfriend is experienced, and Juanito was able to easily accommodate us both. We were at the end of the season and unfortunately did not catch anything, but it was still the highlight of our trip. The lunch was excellent (vegetarian option even provided upon request) and the overall experience was top notch! Price is very reasonable for a once in a lifetime experience in a beautiful place with a fantastic guide. We highly recommend!

I had a fantastic day with Trout Bariloche and their guide Juanito, who understood exactly when to help and when to step back. Top service, great local knowledge of the waters, where and what the fish would take. Dry fly fishing was great with several nice browns to the net. If you are in the area and look for great fishing, they are as good is it gets!

I had a great day fishing Rio Manso with Juanito in early December! I was a single female traveler with limited fly fishing experience, so Rio Manso was recommended for my skill level and it worked out great. I caught 10-15 fish, mostly rainbows and a brown, nothing huge but bigger than I usually catch in Maine so a big success in my book! Juanito was a great guide and gave very helpful and easy to follow tips to improve my casting and land the fish.

Great guide, beautiful river, plentiful trout. Our day drifting the Limay was productive and insightful. Juanito our guide took his time providing my wife with excellent casting instruction and took his time putting us over many good holds. Aside from that the river is beautiful and the weather was perfect. Juanito was also a font of local information and we had a wonderful time. Highly recommend

The guys at Trout Bariloche love what they do, and who can blame them?! Stunningly beautiful, crystal clear river, dropping through steep canyons and loaded with hungry, strong rainbows and browns. From the reservation process to the pick up, the instructions geared towards varied skill and experience levels, the onsite prepared lunches, dinners, and the top notch accommodations, literally every detail is considered. My 12 year old son and I had an absolutely fantastic, bucket list time fly fishing Argentina. We caught a ton of fish, vastly improved our skills and enjoyed every minute of it. We’re beyond appreciative of the staff and guides, and can’t wait to return. Best trip ever!

I had an absolutely fantastic day fishing the Rio Manso with Juan and Miguel. My fly fishing skills certainly required some improvement, and their tuition was patient and thorough, and I felt I improved significantly by the end of the trip. We caught fish pretty much non-stop for the entire day, surrounded by the most incredible Patagonian scenery. The lunch was also excellent. Easily one of the highlights of my 4 month trip in South America. Will definitely be booking another trip when I return to Argentina!

FAQs

What is the best fishing season at Strobel Lake?

The fishing season runs from November to April. Each month offers different characteristics: from abundant dry flies in spring to active trout in the fall. Fishing is also possible in October.

No. Certified guides are prepared to teach from scratch or perfect the technique of advanced anglers.

The variety of waters, personalized service, premium cuisine, and Argentine cultural atmosphere make this much more than a fishing lodge: it’s a complete Patagonian experience.

Calafate Fly Fishing: Among the lakes and rivers of Wild Patagonia

El Calafate, in the province of Santa Cruz, is located on the shores of the imposing Lake Argentino, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. Beyond the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, this area is a paradise for fly fishermen thanks to the quality of its cold, clear waters, the low fishing pressure, and the variety of environments.
The combination of lakes and rivers allows for fishing from the shore by wading, always with the backdrop of the snow-capped Andes Mountains.

calafate fly fishing

Where to Fish in Calafate: Must-See Lakes and Rivers

Lake Argentino
The largest and most challenging of all. Its bays and estuaries are home to lake trout (also known as bigmouths) that can exceed 2 kilograms. The best catches are made at dawn, when the water is still and the trout are actively feeding near the surface.

Lake Roca and Lake Rico
Smaller and more accessible, ideal for trying out different flies. The wind on Lake Roca often makes casting more difficult, but it also oxygenates the water and activates the rainbow trout. On Lake Rico, the water’s clarity allows for spectacular chases.

Santa Cruz River
The region’s great river, its waters milky from the glacier. Here, migratory brown trout swim upstream from the Atlantic between February and April. The days are often intense, with strong currents and powerful trout.

Pelque River and other smaller streams
Small streams of simple beauty, where brook trout are the stars. You can find specimens between 500 g and 1 kg, ideal for enjoying with dry flies and light tackle.

calafate fly fishing

Species You Can Find in Calafate Fishing

Rainbow Trout and Lake Trout (bigmouth)
The most active and combative. Rainbow fish dominate Lakes Roca and Rico, while bigmouth fish prefer deeper areas of Lake Argentino.

Brown Trout and Fontinalis
Brown trout are the jewels of the Santa Cruz: strong, fast, and with intense golden colors. Fontinalis, on the other hand, are more elusive and move among rocks and vegetation, making them ideal for those who enjoy technical fishing.

The Perch, the Local Surprise
Less sought after, but great fun with light tackle. In calm areas of Lake Roca, it catches easily and puts up a fight until the very end.

calafate fly fishing

Techniques and Equipment for Enjoying Patagonian Fly Fishing

Patagonia demands adaptation. In Calafate, the constant wind calls for six or 7-weight rods, floating or intermediate lines, and large streamer-type flies. Muddler Minnows, Woolly Buggers, and Prince-style nymphs perform well year-round.
When the water is low, use longer leaders and small dry flies; on windy days, opt for heavy streamers. Varying your fly pattern according to the water’s color makes all the difference.

calafate fly fishing

When To Go: Fishing Season in El Calafate

The official season runs from November to April, coinciding with spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere. December and January are ideal due to the moderate temperatures and reduced insect activity, although the wind can be intense.
In March and April, brown trout begin their migration, offering the highest catches of the year.

Perito Moreno Glacier: A complete guide to visiting Patagonia's most famous glacier

Where is the Perito Moreno Glacier and why is it so special?

Perito Moreno Glacier Location
Located in Los Glaciares National Park, in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina, Perito Moreno is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world. It is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the third-largest freshwater reserve on the planet.
What makes it unique is not only its immensity—with a surface area of 250 km² and a height of more than 70 meters above sea level—but also the fact that it is one of the few glaciers still in equilibrium, advancing rather than retreating.

Quick Facts About the Glacier

Area: 250 km²

Length: 30 km

Height of its walls: up to 74 m

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981

The glacier is not just a tourist attraction: it is also a natural laboratory for studying climate change and glacial processes.

How to get to Perito Moreno Glacier from El Calafate

The city of El Calafate, located 80 km away, serves as the gateway.

Transportation Options

  • Rental Car: Allows maximum flexibility and stops at viewpoints.
  • Tourist Bus: A more economical option with daily departures.
  • Perito Moreno Glacier Tour: Includes transportation, a guide, and, in some cases, navigation. I recommend this option as it is the most comprehensive, and your goal is to enjoy the experience.

Entrance to Los Glaciares National Park
Admission costs vary for residents and foreigners. It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance during peak season.

What to do at the Perito Moreno Glacier

Perito Moreno Glacier Walkways and Viewpoints
The walkway system offers views from various angles and heights, making it ideal for photographers and families.

Perito Moreno Glacier Boat Tour
The boats approach the ice walls, where the roar of the calving can be heard.

Perito Moreno Glacier Hike
One of the most sought-after experiences: walking on the glacier ice with crampons, accompanied by specialized guides.

The magic of seeing a glacier calving

Why does this phenomenon occur?
The glacier advances until it collides with the Magallanes Peninsula, blocking the outlet of Lake Argentino. The water pressure generates the famous ruptures: an impressive natural spectacle.

When is it most likely to be seen?
Although it is an unpredictable phenomenon, it usually occurs every few years. Even so, ice block calvings are frequent and always impressive.

Best time to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier

High Season (southern summer)
From November to March, the days are long and the weather is milder. Perfect for hiking.

Low Season and Advantages
In winter (June to September), there are fewer tourists and the glacier looks majestic in its snowy setting. Prices are also generally lower.

Combine your trip: from Perito Moreno to Jurassic Lake

We invite you to visit the paradise of Jurassic Lake, visit Calafate, stay there, and see the incredible Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the jewels of the world; We as Argentines defend and value it, knowing that there aren’t many glaciers left within people’s sight, yet they’re so close. This glacier is almost a part of our hearts, and we take great care of it so that future generations can continue to fish in the area. This glacier, with its temperature, supplies water to many surrounding areas, allowing them to continue as they were initially, without draining the lakes and rivers. The cooling produced by the glaciers means that the snow around them takes twice as long to dry. Therefore, the structure of the Jurassic lake also depends on Lake Argentino and most of the southern lakes, as well as the number of glaciers, such as the Upsala Glacier, among others. If you’re an adventure fanatic, you can spend 4 or 5 days fishing in Jurassic Lake and 2 or 3 days trekking and exploring the glaciers. We’ll be waiting for you with a delicious barbecue, red wine, and a family of local guides who, we can guarantee, are always happy to offer you a mate and are very relaxed when it comes to international tourism, thanks to their highly trained professionals and the incredible range of adventures to be had in the area.

Recommended Itinerary for Fishermen
If you’re traveling to Patagonia to visit Jurassic Lake, Perito Moreno is a must:

Before your fishing experience, you can start with the glacier adventure and then head to the lake.
After fishing, the glacier is the icing on the cake of your itinerary.

Practical advice if you visit both destinations
Bring technical clothing: the weather in Patagonia is changeable, both on the lake and on the glacier.

Take advantage of the proximity to diversify your trip, combining nature, adventure, and fishing all in one trip.

Jurassic Lake Fishing: My Experience Fishing for Giant Rainbow Trout

Fishing at Strobel Lake, known worldwide as Jurassic Lake, is much more than a fishing trip. It’s about facing the extreme landscape of Argentine Patagonia, where the wind never stops, the waters are an almost unreal blue, and rainbow trout reach sizes that defy logic.
From the first cast, I realized this place is like no other on the planet.

Techniques and equipment for fishing in Jurassic Lake

Sight Fishing and more Effective Flies
The clear water allows for one of the most exciting forms of fishing: sight fishing. In my case, the winning team was a Fat Albert combined with a Prince nymph. It only took a few minutes to hook a huge rainbow trout, sending me back to the lake, my fly line taut and my heart racing.

How to Adapt to Wind and Lake Conditions
The wind is a constant companion. I’ve learned that it’s best to line up casts with the wind at your back and look for shores where gusts help project the line. Calm days are rare, but when they occur, sight casting becomes excellent.

Recommended Equipment for Handling Giant Trout
A 7–8 wt rod, short leader, and heavy-duty tippet are essential. The strength of these trout should not be underestimated: their girth and power make even the smallest ones difficult to control. A large net is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Most productive areas and strategies from the shore

Jurassic Lake Reading: Points, Currents, and Turbid Zones
Areas where the wind buffets and stirs up sediment are especially productive. Often, these slightly turbid waters concentrate food supplies, attracting trout in search of scuds.
Points that jut out into the lake are also excellent: they force fish lines to converge, increasing strike opportunities.

How to Use the Wind to Your Advantage
Some anglers see it as an enemy; I consider it an ally. With the wind at your back, casts are longer and flies move naturally with the waves, generating irresistible action for Jurassic Lake’s rainbow trout.

Practical tips for fishing in Jurassic Lake

The Thrill of Facing a Jurassic Lake Rainbow Trout Weighing over 7 Kilos
Adrenaline, Power, and Challenge
There are no words to describe the moment a trout weighing over 7 kilos takes the fly. The rod bends, the reel sings, and time stands still. In a single day, I caught the five biggest trout of my life. Some escaped, bending the hooks like paper, but each fight was a lesson in humility.

What I learned from each Battle
These trout teach you to stay calm, respect the environment, and value every second. It’s not just about fishing; it’s about understanding the balance between technique and wild nature.

Frequently asked questions about jurassic lake fishing

When is the best time to fish in Jurassic Lake?

Between October and April, with peak spawning in October and November.

Fat Albert, Prince Nymph, and balanced olive green leech are infallible.

The lake has alkaline waters, an abundance of scuds, and no natural predators: a perfect ecosystem for extreme growth.

Rainbow trout from Jurassic Lake, also known as Strobel Lake

Why is Jurassic Lake trout unique to Argentina?

This trout was introduced to Argentina many years ago, and in some places, it has grown so much that the lake where it lives has even been nicknamed Jurassic Park. This Jurassic Lake trout is one of the best fisheries in all of Argentina, thanks to its large size and exceptional strength. One of the characteristics that has made this trout grow so much is that the lake is very pure, clean, and has plenty of food, allowing them to navigate together in large schools from one place to another, following the schools of scoots that emerge from under the rocks depending on where the wind is blowing that day. There are gigantic schools spread throughout the lake, and then there are many solitary trout, which are very large, sometimes the largest, and which have their own territories. While these trout also migrate to streams to reproduce, they are more resident in certain bays. These trout are difficult to catch and are the largest. There we have the record of 12 kilograms, thanks to the persistence of our guides, who managed to catch that trout. We guarantee that we are always very close, every year, to seeing a bigger one.

When is the Best Time to Fish Jurassic Lake?

Catching big trout in Jurassic Lake is quite a feat, especially in April, when the trout become more active. Temperatures are also slightly lower during this time, and the trout come closer to the shore, as they are hungrier, knowing that winter is approaching. During January and February, these trout are much more elusive, but there are giant schools with many large trout, reaching up to 6, 7, and 8 kilograms during those months. In fact, the biggest trout are also selective, and April is when it’s easiest for the guide to help you catch one.

Record-breaking trout in Jurassic Lake. Why is this so?

The rocks here are gigantic, formed millions of years ago by a kind of small fold that hardly exists anywhere in the Andes. Not even the most fertile areas in the United States have these rocks in such quantity, right in the open air. These rocks, which contain a high amount of limestone, scatter easily in the water and, in a very short time, become rich in nutrients, providing very fertile food for the microorganisms that live in those areas. This also happens in some places in the United States, but in the Jurassic lake, it’s truly an incredible spectacle. These are small populations that exist under the rocks, and when the waves hit them, they emerge to the sides, and they are a fishing paradise, and you can see large schools of trout approaching, sometimes up to half a meter from your feet. If you stay still for too long, you’ll see them circling you. This spectacle is unique to Argentina, and it has the peculiarity that, since there are no rivers where the trout can escape, they continue to live in that lake until they grow to gigantic size and truly resemble Jurassic rainbow trout.
